Seating Arrangement — Exam Approach (IBPS PO/Clerk)

  • Step 1 — Count seats & directions: Note total people, whether it's a single row, double row, or circle, and which direction each person/group faces.
  • Step 2 — Anchor with absolute clues first: "X sits at the extreme left" or "Y is at Floor 1" gives a fixed point. Place these before any relative clues.
  • Step 3 — Chain relative clues: "B is 2nd to the right of A" — place B relative to A. Then look for who connects to B.
  • Step 4 — Use elimination: If 4 positions are filled and 2 remain, the two remaining people fill the two remaining slots. Cross out impossible positions.
  • Double-row trick: In a North-facing / South-facing setup, "left" and "right" are mirrored. Person facing North — their left is West (paper left). Person facing South — their left is East (paper right).
  • Circular trick: "3rd to the right" = move 3 seats clockwise. "Opposite" = n/2 seats away. Fix one person (say, position 1) and build clockwise.
  • IBPS PO Mains: Expect 3–4 constraints that contradict naive reading. Look for "not adjacent to" and "between" clues — these eliminate the most positions fastest.
  • Time rule: If you can't crack 2 clues in 90 seconds, skip the whole set and return — 5 questions × 1 minute each in Prelims.

(i) J and K are on the same side but not adjacent to each other (so they are at the two ends of their side, with one person between them; but a square with 2 per side means J and K share a side and ARE the two people on that side, hence they ARE adjacent).
